| Proposal abstract: RUBICODE, through the examination of a broad suite of experiences and data sources from many previous and ongoing projects, will elaborate concepts of dynamic ecosystems to provide examples of innovative conservation strategies that can be readily implemented at the national, European and pan-European level. The project will prioritise these strategies for the most significant terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems of Europe by reviewing the impacts of global change on those components of biological diversity essential for maintaining ecosystem services. Important and threatened services will be identified and methods for relating biodiversity in dynamic ecosystems to the provision of these services will be appraised, compared and tested for the first time. The impact of societal, economic and environmental drivers on the nature and performance of service-providing populations and consequently the socio-economic costs and benefits involved will be assessed by reviewing the published literature, soliciting expert and stakeholder opinion and collating and further analysing existing databases generated in appropriate projects using monitoring/experimental techniques and empirical and process-based modelling approaches. Responses will be analysed to develop frameworks for improving and testing indicators and linking ecosystem service provision to biological traits. The reviewed and quantified results will be used to explore different management strategies for ecosystems, habitats and species and to inform priorities for biodiversity conservation policy. RUBICODE will also identify current gaps in knowledge and propose a roadmap for future research that will contribute to well-founded, coherent and rationalised conservation strategies concentrated in the most crucial and immediate areas of importance based on the best available science. These activities will build on a strong interface between the project, stakeholders and policy-makers. |
